Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin believes Ravichandran Ashwin retired in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the all-rounder would have felt let down by his team not realising he was the team's 'best spinner'.
Haddin pointed out that India played three different spinners in the first three Tests, which further would have pushed Ashwin towards making the call. "The first three Test matches, they played three different spinners. So they arrived not knowing what their game style is going to be around here," Haddin said on the 'Willow Talk' podcast.
"His [Ashwin's] record is elite, and he just went, 'You know what, I'm not sitting on the bench. If you can't decide that I'm your best spinner, I'm done. I've played enough. I don't need this,'" Haddin added.
Ashwin ended his career as India's highest-wicket-taker in Tests with 537 scalps at 24. After playing in the second Test in Adelaide, he called curtains on his international career following the drawn game in Brisbane.
