Brandon King will lead West Indies in the three-match T20 Internationals (T20I) against South Africa, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Sunday (May 19). The batter's appointment comes as regular skipper Rovman Powell and other international stars will be occupied with the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
While Powell and Shimron Hetmyer are plying their trade with Rajasthan Royals (RR), Andre Russell, Shrefane Rutherford (both Kolkata Knight Riders), and Alzarri Joseph (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) have also not been picked in the West Indies squad as they will be part of the IPL 2024 Qualifiers.
Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope have been rested for the series, while Shamar Joseph, who is part of the T20 World Cup squad, is expected to make his debut his T20I debut. CWI have also confirmed that Joseph and Rutherford will later be added to the squad if their respective IPL teams do not make it to the final.
"We have not played together as a team since the Australia series, but we just completed a very high-intensity training camp in Antigua," White Ball Head Coach Daren Sammy said.
"Now we have the chance to integrate some of our players returning from the IPL and build some momentum as a group going into the World Cup."
Roston Chase led West Indies A against Nepal in King's absence recently. The three T20Is against South Africa will be played on May 23, 25 and 26 - all at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica ahead of the T20 World Cup, which will begin from June 1 onwards.
West Indies squad: Brandon King (c), Roston Chase, Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Mathew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh
