Buttler, Bethell & Jacks To Miss IPL Playoffs After Being Named In England Squad

The IPL 2025 playoffs start from May 29 but they collide with the ODI series between England and West Indies

In what comes as a significant blow to Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians, Jos Buttler (GT), Jacob Bethell (RCB) and Will Jacks (MI) will be unavailable for the playoffs after being named in England’s squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies.

The IPL 2025 playoffs start from May 29 but they collide with the ODI series between England and West Indies, which also kicks off on the same date. GT, RCB and MI are all prime contenders for not just the playoffs, but to make the top two, but there’s a good chance now that their key English players will leave 2-3 days before the IPL 2025 playoffs kick off.

It goes without saying that GT will be the most affected team by this development. Buttler is averaging 71.43 so far in IPL 2025, having amassed a whopping 500 runs. He is the nucleus of GT's batting alongside Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan.

Rajasthan Royals’ Jofra Archer and Chennai Super Kings’ Jamie Overton have also been named in the ODI squad, but their teams have already been eliminated. Meanwhile, RCB’s Liam Livingstone has been dropped from the ODI side, so he’ll get the opportunity to finish IPL 2025 with his franchise. His teammate Phil Salt, too, will get the chance to complete IPL 2025 with RCB having also been dropped from the ODI side.

The three-match series against West Indies is Harry Brook’s first assignment as full-time white-ball skipper for England.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Liam Dawson is in line to play his first T20I in over three years having been named in the squad for the shortest format. Livingstone has been left out of the T20Is, while Archer has been rested, picked only for the 50-over games.
