Cameron Bancroft’s Big Bash League (BBL) season is over following breaking his shoulder on the back of a horror on-field collision with Sydney Thunder teammate Daniel Sams in the clash against Perth Scorchers on January 3 (Friday). In addition to breaking his shoulder, Bancroft has also suffered a broken nose on the back of the nasty collision.
The collision that led to Bancroft suffering the aforementioned injuries occurred in the 16th over of the match, in which the Scorchers were batting first.
Bancroft, who was running backwards attempting to take Cooper Connolly’s catch, crashed into Sams at full speed. Both players hit the ground instantly, and while Bancroft immediately held his hands to his face in pain, Sams lay on the ground, barely moving an inch. The clash was suspended temporarily before play resumed after a 15-minute halt.
“Bancroft and Sams were both still in a Perth hospital on Saturday morning following their sickening clash in the field during the Thunder's last-ball win over the Scorchers,” cricket.com.au confirmed.
“The pair are awaiting the rest of CT scans, but Sams will also be sidelined for at least 12 days after he and Bancroft were diagnosed with concussions.
“Both players will also spend at least another night in Western Australia, unable to fly to Brisbane with the rest of their teammates.”
The nasty clash led to the Thunder using two concussion substitutes: Liam Hatcher and Ollie Davies, who was sick but had to be dragged out of the hotel last minute to fill-in for Bancroft.
Davies only managed 3 off 8 balls, but the Thunder eventually got over the line thanks to a superb cameo from Sherfane Rutherford (39* off 19), who smashed a boundary off the final ball to take his side home.
