It was a frustrating start to the first day of the third Test in Brisbane on December 14, with rain playing spoilsport, not once but twice throughout the match. After India won the toss and opted to bowl, they were met with a rain break in the sixth over of the innings, with a drizzle stopping play.
However, they returned for one mini-session where seven overs of play were possible. It was a session where the Indian bowlers were mighty impressive with impeccable lines and lengths, including Akash Deep, who bowled four tight overs.
That’s when it went from frustrating to infuriating for the Indian fans, who woke up at 5 AM to watch their team play, with persistent rain ending the day’s play.
So, how are they going to make up for lost time?
Well, like in all rain-affected games, the next four days will start early, with extended sessions to monitor the overrate. The match will begin at 5.20 AM (IST) for the next four days, with 98 overs of play expected every day.
What’s the weather prediction?
Unfortunately, not a lot of good news. While the weather is clear on Sunday (day two), the next three days are in dire danger of being washed out. There’s a 50% chance of rain on Monday, a 90% chance of a thunderstorm on Tuesday and a 70% chance of a thunderstorm on Wednesday.
What does it mean to India’s WTC chances?
India’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final will be as follows:
> If the BGT ends in a 2-2 draw & AUS avoid whitewash against SL
> If AUS win the BGT 3-2 (result against SL won’t matter in this case)
> If IND win BGT 3-2 and AUS win at least one Test against SL
> If IND win BGT 3-1 and AUS beat SL 2-0
> If IND win BGT 4-1 and AUS beat SL 2-0
