Following a seven-wicket win over the Bahamas, Canada became the 13th team to book a place in the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, on June 22 (Sunday). Canada, courtesy of them topping the table in the Americas regional qualifying finals, have sealed themselves a place in next year’s T20 tournament.
Canada have won five on the trot, ensuring they finish on top of the table, after a win against the Bahamas. Last time around, too, Canada made it to the World Cup through the same route and played the tournament opener against the United States of America.
Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, the USA and the West Indies have all qualified because of either finishing in the Super 8 stage last year or topping the rankings. On the other hand, the two hosts - India and Sri Lanka - have also qualified because of being the hosts.
Seven other teams will now qualify further - two from the European qualifier, two from the African qualifier, and three from the Asia-EAP qualifier. It will be the first-ever T20 World Cup, with 20 teams, as the ICC view it as a way to extend cricket beyond mainstream.
