Captaincy is the biggest achievement of my career: Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah has been named captain for India's rescheduled Test against England starting on Friday

Jasprit Bumrah on Thursday described his appointment as India's Test captain as the greatest achievement of his career. Ahead of the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, BCCI named Bumrah as the captain after Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19.

Bumrah became the first fast bowler in 35 years to lead India in Tests since Kapil Dev in 1987.

"Its a huge achievement and an honour for me. Playing Test cricket was my childhood dream and captaincy is one of the biggest achievements of my career," Bumrah said in a press interaction on Thursday.

"When I knew, I spoke to my family who were very happy and are proud of me. Im really glad that this day has come. Now, Im focused on what we need to do in the game," he added.

Bumrah, who has played 29 Tests and claimed 123 at an average of 21.73, said that he has been focused on his performances on the pitch which has helped him reach the top level.

"I have never thought what labels people give me. I always backed myself and followed my instincts. Nothing changes for me. It about helping the team by doing the best of your ability. I also have people to help me," he said.

Bumrah revealed that he was communicated of the management's decision on Thursday morning after Rohit had a chat with head coach Rahul Dravid.

"We were waiting for Rohit's test and today morning he tested positive. He had a discussion with the coach and told that ill be leading the side," Bumrah said.

Dhoni's words and Virat's advise

Bumrah, who has not captained a side in his professional career so far, revealed the advise he received from former Indian captain MS Dhoni.

"I have always loved to be in tough situations and this is no different. You play cricket to take up challenges and that's always exciting. I have spoken to MS (Dhoni) and he told me 'I have also captained the Indian team and had never captained anywhere.' He is the most successful Indian captain in history," he said.

The pacer is glad to have former Indian captain Virat Kohli by his side for his first assignment.

"We had conversations with Virat and Rohit. He (Virat) will always be there during the game and his suggestions are invaluable for the team," Bumrah said.
