Chases become difficult when you lose wickets: Hardik Pandya

India failed to chase down a modest 150 in the first T20I between the two teams at Brian Lara stadium, Trinidad

An unexpected loss in the first T20I could potentially ruffle up a few feathers in the Indian think tank. But, the Indian T20I skipper Hardik Pandya was wary of making any sudden changes. He felt that making errors is fine for a "young team".

"We were right in the chase. We made some errors which cost us, but it is fine. A young team will make mistakes. Throughout the game, we were in control. I have always believed that in T20 cricket, if you lose wickets, it becomes difficult to chase down a total," Hardik Pandya said at the post match presentation.

A silver lining amidst all this were the performances of their debutantes. Both, Mukesh Kumar and Tilak Varma showed great composure and were phenomenal when it came to execution.

In the first innings, Mukesh Kumar came back brilliantly at the death after an expensive first over. He got his yorkers right consistently and helped ensure that West Indies were not able to score a single boundary in the last 20 balls of their innings.

And during the chase, just when it looked like India were falling behind the eight ball, Tilak Varma played of great maturity. He started his international career with two delightful sixes off Alzarri Joseph. He singlehandedly maintained the tempo of the innings, and was the only shining line in the Indian batting lineup.

"When we lost a couple of wickets in a row it cost us. The bowling combination of three spinners was down to the conditions. We wanted Yuzi and Kuldeep to play together, and Axar brings batting. For Mukesh to have these two weeks and make his debut was fantastic. Very pleasing to see the way Tilak started his innings."

The action now moves to Guyana for the second and the third T20Is on Sunday.
