Committed Prithvi Shaw Has Been Doing Training Drills ‘Religiously’ - Maharashtra Selector

Shaw switched states during the off-season, shifting base to Maharashtra

After going unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction and after being left out of his state side, Mumbai, it felt like Prithvi Shaw needed a fresh start, a complete reset. It’s precisely what the opening batter sought as well, moving states during the off-season, shifting base to Maharashtra.

And so far, it’s a move that’s proven to be fruitful. Shaw is currently playing in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in Tamil Nadu and there he’s posted scores of 111 & 66 in his first two games, creating an impact at the top of the order.

Work ethic, and not talent, has always been Shaw’s issue, but Maharashtra chief selector Akshay Darekar asserted that the 25-year-old is now absolutely on the ‘right track’.

“Prithvi is on the right track. There was never an issue with his batting. He is focused and keen to make a statement with his bat. He is completely committed to his fitness too and has been doing his training drills religiously," Darekar told Mid-Day, reported News18.

“We know he always likes to play aggressively and dominate the opposition. And he batted the same way in his first two matches for Maharashtra at the Buchi Babu Tournament. His class was evident in both those knocks. He is hungry to score big runs.”

Darekar insisted that Shaw is driven to make the upcoming season count and create a real impact for his new side.

“The target is to help Maharashtra reach the Ranji knockouts through his strong performances. The more he performs, the better it will be, not just for our team but also for him, as he can achieve his individual goals too. He realises that this upcoming season will be crucial,” he said.

Still only 25, Shaw last played for India back in 2021. He last played Test cricket back in 2020, in the fateful Adelaide Test against Australia, which saw India get bowled out for 36.
