Gujarat Titans (GT) chased down 204 against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 19 (Saturday) - their first 200-plus chase in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Before today, they had conceded more than 200 on four occasions and lost all of those matches.
What made this win even more special was that this is the first time DC have allowed any team to chase down anything more than 200 against them. The Capitals have got a 200-plus total 14 times in the IPL, with this being their only defeat in those games.
Asked to bat first, Abishek Porel (18 off 9), Karun Nair (31 off 18), KL Rahul (28 off 14), Axar Patel (39 off 32), Tristan Stubbs (31 off 21) and Ashutosh Sharma (37 off 19) all chipped in as DC got to 203 in their 20 overs. For GT, Prasidh Krishna claimed four wickets.
In the second innings, GT lost Shubman Gill in the second over, but Sai Sudharsan (21-ball 36) and Buttler put on 60 runs for the second wicket. Sherfane Rutherford (34-ball 43) then took over and pushed Gujarat forward alongside Buttler. GT needed 15 off 12, and that’s when Mukesh Kumar bowled a superb 19th over, dismissing Rutherford and conceding only five runs.
Mitchell Starc got 10 runs to defend in the final over, but Rahul Tewatia smoked the first two deliveries for a six and a four and made sure there was no Starc special today. Meanwhile, Buttler remained unbeaten on 97 off 54 deliveries, studded with 11 fours and four maximums. Five of those 11 fours came off consecutive deliveries against Starc.
Thanks to this win, the Titans are now at the top of the IPL 2025 points table, followed by DC at No.2. GT will next play Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 21 (Monday), while the Capitals’ next game is against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 22 (Tuesday).
