Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered their eighth defeat while chasing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 - the joint-most by a team in a single edition. On May 18 (Sunday), the Royals failed to chase down a target of 220 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Jaipur despite scoring 89/1 in the powerplay.
RR have chased nine times in the IPL 2025 and lost eight of those encounters. The now-defunct Pune Warriors also lost eight matches while chasing, and they did it twice - 2012 and 2013. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals (DC) lost seven games twice (2013 and 2023).
The only time RR successfully chased down a total in the IPL 2025 was against Gujarat Titans (GT), when they hunted down 209 with more than four overs to spare, thanks to Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 166-run opening stand in 11.5 overs.
The two left-handed openers once again went crazy, this time adding 76 runs in 4.5 overs against PBKS, but RR still managed to mess up the run chase. Suryavanshi slammed 40 off 15, while Jaiswal hit 50 off 25, as RR were 89/1 at the end of six overs - their best powerplay score in IPL history. They even crossed the 100-run mark in 7.3 overs.
However, that’s when things went downhill for Rajasthan. Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag scored 33 runs between them but wasted 27 deliveries. The required rate kept getting higher and higher, but Dhruv Jurel (53 off 31) put on a good fight.
While Jurel tried his best, Shimron Hetmyer and Shubham Dubey offered no support from the other end. The two left-handed finishers scored 18 off 19 deliveries between them, and that more or less sealed the game in PBKS’s favour. RR eventually fell short by 10 runs and lost their fifth home game - the joint-most for them in a season.
