Prithvi Shaw is controversy’s favourite child as far as Indian cricket in the present day is concerned. Considered a prodigy ever since he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record at school cricket level, Shaw was on the right path in his early days, when he captained the Indian team to victory in the 2018 edition of the U-19 World Cup.
But after having made his India debut in all three formats, and after enjoying early success, the batter has fallen off the radar of the selectors of not just the national team, but also his domestic team-Mumbai.
This happened after Shaw was part of several controversies, including the alleged refusal to attend the Mumbai team's training session during the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy.
Now the right-handed batter, who averages 46 in First-Class cricket and 55 in List-A format, has decided to leave Mumbai. He has sought a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
The 25-year-old was not even considered for any Indian Premier League (IPL) side in the 2025 mega auction. But even under such tough circumstances, Shaw’s sense of humour continues to carry on as he compares his situation to that of Jetha Lal, a famous Hindi TV character, who, without any fault of his own, courts problems in every episode of the comedy serial.
“Controversies catch me. I am Jethalal of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah,” Shaw was quoted as saying to Dainik Jagran.
