West Indies were on the receiving end of some of the worst umpiring decisions by a TV umpire during the first Test against Australia in Barbados. Adrian Holdstock was the TV umpire and the West Indies head coach Daren Sammy was amongst the ones who criticised his decision-making with the Decision Review System (DRS) appeals.
After the game ended in a defeat for the hosts, their skipper, Roston Chase, too criticised the TV umpire. But it was the strong-worded criticism by Sammy, which involved him dragging past matches officiated by the umpire into the controversy that caught the match referee Javagal Srinath’s eye.
He reprimanded the former West Indies captain. Sammy’s comments were considered as Level 1 offences according to the violation of Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct. He was slapped with a 15 per cent deduction in match fees and one demerit point, which was his first in 24 months.
Article 2.7 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct pertains to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match or any player, player support personnel, match official or team participating in any international match.”
"You don't want to get yourself in a situation where you're wondering about certain umpires. Is there something against this team? But when you see decision after decision, then it raises the question."- Sammy.
