Making an international debut at the age of 17 is a tough task, and becoming the captain of the side at such a tender age is almost impossible. But Croatia’s Zach Vukusic managed to do both, breaking the record of becoming the youngest captain in international cricket.
The feat was achieved by Vukusic during the first T20I of the four-match series between Croatia and Cyprus, held at the Mladost Cricket Ground in Zagreb, Croatia.
Becoming the captain at the age of 17 years and 311 days, Vukusic broke Afghanistan legend Rashid Khan’s record of being the youngest captain. Rashid became Afghanistan’s ODI captain at the age of 19 years and 165 days.
However, it was not just Rashid whose record was broken by Vukusic, as he also went past the likes of Noman Amjad of France, Carl Hartmann of the Isle of Man and Luwsanzundui Erdenebulgan of Mongolia, all of whom had become captains of their international teams at the ages 18 years 24 days, 18 years 276 days and 18 years 324 days respectively.
The Croat all-rounder hit a fifty on his international debut against Belgium in July 2024 and has so far accumulated 206 runs and taken six wickets in the seven international matches that he has played.
