CSK, MI Remain Only Teams To Defend IPL Title As KKR Bow Out Of IPL 2025
With a no result against RCB, KKR are out of the competition, as the 2024 IPL champions fail to defend their title
2024 IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders have been knocked out of the 2025 edition, after a no result against the in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on May 17 (Saturday). The three-time IPL champions had to win all their remaining games and hope for favourable results to get in through the back gate.
However, the defending champions have been knocked out of the competition owing to their unfavourable result against RCB, where they only got one point. Unfortunately for KKR, this was their second no-result, after a washed-out clash against Punjab Kings earlier in the campaign in Kolkata.
KKR’s pursuit of a title defence went in thin air, and so Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians remain the only two teams who have defended their crown. CSK won their first IPL title back in 2010, and a year later, defended their title in IPL 2011 against arch-rivals RCB at home.
On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians achieved that feat when they won in 2019 against CSK and then defended their title against Delhi Capitals in 2020. Unfortunately, in 2021, they failed to do a hat-trick as they finished fifth on the points table.
