The Mitchell Marsh-led Australia achieved a very rare feat today, becoming only the second full-member side in history to sweep a fellow full-member team 5-0 in a T20I series. Australia chased in all five games, and some outrageous power-hitting saw the Kangaroos absolutely tear into the Windies bowlers, dominating all five matches.
Yet despite all the sixes that were hit, victory for the Aussies was set-up in all games by fast bowler Nathan Ellis, who finished with an economy of 7.88 in a high-scoring series, by some distance the best among all bowlers who featured in at least three games.
Ellis, for the longest time, has been seen as the ‘first cab off the rank’, but former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin believes the 30-year-old is now ready to push one of the big three members — Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood — out of the first team.
“In the conditions in the subcontinent, a bowler like Nathan Ellis might be pushing one of those big three bowlers (out of the starting XI),” Haddin was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.
“He gives you something different, he’s got change-ups, he bowls all the tough overs.
“He’s at the stage now where he can put pressure on one of those three bowlers for a position.”
Despite being a standout bowler in T20s for quite a few years now, Ellis has only played 25 T20Is since 2021, taking 38 wickets at an economy of 7.70. He featured in three games in the T20 World Cup last year — against Oman, Namibia and Scotland — where he took 4 wickets at an economy of 6.72.
He was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the IPL 2025 mega auction, but he only played a solitary game.
