CSK Star Hungry For International Return: ‘I Know I’ll Get Back In Eventually’

He has not played a single international game in 2025

When Sam Curran broke into the international scene as a teenager, the all-rounder was dubbed the future of English cricket and was expected to carve out a strong career.

Curran still has an impressive CV, decorated by a T20 World Cup in 2022 win, in which he was Player of the Tournament, but seven years after his international debut, the 27-year-old finds himself fully out of the England set-up. Curran has not featured in any international games in 2025, and it’s been four years since he last played Test cricket for England.

For someone like Curran, who is still very much thriving in the franchise circuit, it would be easy to lose the desire to play international cricket, but in the 27-year-old’s own words, there is a desire ‘burning’ inside him to represent England again.

"In terms of England, I'd love to get back. I watched the home series [against India] and thought, 'Wow, how cool is that'. A younger player is probably attracted by the franchise scene, but because I have experienced Test cricket, a World Cup win in Australia and stuff like that, the desire to return to international cricket still burns strongly inside me,” Curran said, speaking on the ‘Fore the Love of Cricket’ podcast hosted by Stuart Broad.

“I have a lot of time left, fingers crossed it won't be too long before I make an international return."

The all-rounder revealed that he’s had relevant chats with head coach Brendon McCullum, and he asserted that he has the self-belief that he’ll be back donning the England colours in no time.

"This is probably the first time in my career I've found myself out of a squad. I've had chats with Brendon McCullum. I've had conversations with him with regards to where he sees me. I won't go into the details but I know from my side of things that I'll get back in,” Curran said.

Curran is currently featuring in The Hundred 2025, where he’s representing table toppers Oval Invincibles. He’s the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament so far, with six wickets in three innings. He’s also had a fine first-class season for Surrey in 2025, averaging 51 with the bat while having taken nine wickets at an average of 29.00 with the ball.
