CSK-MI to kick off IPL 2020

Abu Dhabi will host the inaugural match of IPL 2020 on September 19. The last league match is on November 3

Runners-up Chennai Super Kings will be playing the inaugural match against reigning champions Mumbai Indians at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 19. The much-awaited Indian Premier League schedule was announced by the IPL’s operations team on Sunday (September 6).

Earlier, there were rumors that Royal Challengers Bangalore could replace Chennai Super Kings in the opening game against defending champions Mumbai Indians as CSK were left in a fix after 13 of their members including two players (Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad) tested positive for COVID 19.

The schedule was expected to be out in the last week of August but the announcement was delayed after the CSK camp was hit by the COVID outbreak.

Moved out of India due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, the upcoming edition of the IPL will be played across three venues. Dubai will host 24 matches, while 20 matches will be played in Abu Dhabi and 12 matches will be staged in Sharjah.

After the tournament-opener, Dubai will host its first game on September 20 when Delhi Capitals will face Kings XI Punjab followed by the third match on September 21 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The action will then shift to Sharjah on September 22 when Rajasthan Royals will meet Chennai Super Kings.

The last match of the league will be played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians on November 3 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

There will be 10 double headers, with the first match starting at 3:30pm IST and the second 7:30pm, according to a BCCI release.

The venues for playoffs and the IPL final will be announced later. The final is slated for November 10 as for the first time, the summit clash will take place on a weekday.
