Chelmsford was witness to one of the most outrageous knocks in Youth Test history today (July 23) as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) superstar Ayush Mhatre, also captain of the Indian U-19 side, smashed a 64-ball 100 in his team’s pursuit of 355 in the fourth innings against hosts England.
India U19 were set a target of 355 in just under two sessions, and they suffered a body blow in the very first ball of the chase, losing Vaibhav Suryavanshi for a golden duck. However, it was from this point that Mhatre played one of the boldest knocks in recent times, throwing the kitchen sink at the English bowlers.
The 18-year-old got to his 50 off just 25 balls and got to his hundred off the 64th ball of his innings, taking a single to get to the landmark. He added 26 more off the next 16 balls he faced, but perished for 126 off 80 balls.
After a very rough ODI series, where he scored just 27 runs in 4 innings, the Tests have seen Mhatre redeem himself. He scored 102 & 32 in the first game and amassed 80 in the first innings of this match before scoring a ton in the fourth innings.
Earlier this year, CSK roped Mhatre in as a replacement, and he shot into the limelight in IPL 2025, scoring 240 runs at a strike rate of nearly 190.00.
