NEWSAll-rounder Daryl Mitchell will replace Devon Conway for the upcoming two-Test series against India. Conway was ruled out of the T20 World Cup final and also the series against India after he broke his hand after striking his bat in frustration following his dismissal against Pakistan in the semi-final.
Mitchell has opened the batting for New Zealand in the mega event and scored a match-winning 72 not out of 47 deliveries in the semis. Blackcaps head coach Gary Stead confirmed that Conway would return home after the T20I series against India, which begins on November 17 in Jaipur. Mitchell, on the other hand, will stay on for the Test series as well.
Since his debut in 2019, Mitchell has played five Tests for New Zealand, scoring 232 runs at 58, which includes a fifty and a century.
“It’s a shame for Devon to miss out on the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle, but it also offers up an opportunity for someone else,” Stead said.
“Daryl’s versatility means he can cover a lot of batting positions and he’s certainly got plenty of confidence at the moment He’s proven he can perform in Test cricket and I know he’s excited to rejoin the Test group.”
The New Zealand side will head to India on Monday (November 15) ahead of the T20I series, which will be held in Jaipur, Ranchi and Kolkata between November 17 and 21.
The three-match T20I series will be followed by a couple of Tests in Kanpur (November 25) and Mumbai (December 3).
