Sometimes luck might help you once, but not always. People have to make their own luck. This proved ultimately true in the case of Lucknow Super Giants batter Mitch Marsh, who went through a wide range of emotions in a span of two deliveries, and at the end, a young debutant spinner was the only one left smiling.
Marsh had begun LSG’s innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Lucknow on a great note, after having taken the SRH bowlers to cleaners in the powerplay. So belligerent were he and Aiden Markram, that LSG were 69/0 at the end of the six overs. Overall, before getting out eventually in the 11th over, Marsh scored 65 off just 39 deliveries with the help of six fours and four sixes.
All this happened until Harshal Patel almost dismissed him with a brilliant delivery that was bowled on a fuller length outside off. The ball almost stuck in the pitch, and all Marsh could do was push it back to the bowler. The ball came low, and at first look, it felt like Harshal had taken the catch.
However, upon seeing the replay, it was evident that the ball was entering his palm with his fingers underneath it at the same time as it was also touching the ground. It was a marginal call, regardless, with the fingers being around the ball clearly. But the third umpire chose to rule it in the batter’s favour.
Alas, Marsh’s luck didn’t last more as Harsh Dubey, the left arm spinner from Vidarbha who was making his debut today, bowled a delivery into Marsh that turned away and sucked him into playing a shot away from his body and got him caught at short third.
At the end, Dubey was the only one laughing as Marsh had to take the long walk back to the pavilion.
