By virtue of being the 2024 IPL champions, Kolkata was the rightful host for the IPL 2025 final. However, the situation took a dramatic turn once the tournament was halted due to the India-Pakistan war. With the league spilling into June, the monsoon was always going to be a concern. As a result, the BCCI decided to study weather patterns across the country before zeroing in on Ahmedabad - Indian cricket’s political capital in recent years.
That said, questions were raised about the venue shift being politically motivated. But BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia was quick to dismiss those speculations, insisting that the decision was based purely on science.
"The decision was never political. We have banked on scientific material and inputs. There was no forecast for rain in Ahmedabad at the time of the GC," Saikia told Cricbuzz.
According to the report, the IPL Governing Council (GC) examined weather patterns from cities across India. Kolkata had a 65 percent chance of rain on the night of the final, while Ahmedabad showed only a 3 percent probability. The forecast ultimately proved accurate - the final in Ahmedabad concluded without interruption, while Kolkata experienced significant rainfall that evening.
