After Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar left the post of Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) secretary and treasurer, Devjit Saikia and Prabhtej Bhatia are all ready to replace them in their respective positions.
Both have filed their nominations unopened at the BCCI office on Saturday. Their nomination applications will be scrutinised on January 6, after which a by-election will be held during the BCCI Special General Meeting (SGM) on January 12 for.
AK Joti, the former chief election commissioner of India, has been appointed the electoral officer to oversee the by-election.
Earlier, Shah left BCCI to become chairman of the ICC, and Shelar took a ministerial position in the Maharashtra government after the alliance led by Shelar’s Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) won the state elections. According to BCCI rules, a minister or government employee can’t be an office bearer.
Bhatia is from the Chattisgarh State Cricket Sangh and has been nominated by the association for the SGM. He will replace Shelar as the treasurer.
Meanwhile, Saikia hails from the Assam Cricket Association and is the BCCI joint secretary. After he is elected the secretary, that position will be left empty, and so far, it still remains to be seen how the BCCI plans to fill that position.
Their terms will last for three years, and they can be elected for three terms in total, with a compulsory three-year cooling-off period between the terms.
