In what comes as a huge scare to South Africa, just 10 days before their two-Test series against India, batter Dewald Brevis has sustained a shoulder injury that has ruled him out of the ongoing three-match ODI series against Pakistan.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed in a statement that the 22-year-old sustained a low-grade shoulder muscle strain during the third T20I in Lahore, and added that a replacement will be announced in due course.
“Brevis will undergo rehabilitation with the Proteas Men’s medical team in Pakistan in preparation for the upcoming Test tour of India,” CSA confirmed.
While Brevis is not a household name in Tests yet, South Africa will be banking on the youngster to provide the x-factor to throw the Indian spinners off. He scored two ducks in the three innings he played in the Pakistan Test series, but the other knock was a run-a-ball 54 in the fourth innings, where he took on the Pakistan spinners and excelled. Currently, Brevis averages only 23.00 in Tests but has a strike rate of 95.83.
The two-Test series between India and South Africa will start on November 14 in Kolkata. The second Test will be played in Guwahati from November 22, and that will be a one-of-a-kind game as it will see, for the first time ever in a Test in India, the tea break taken before lunch.
