Did Pietersen Flirt With UK PM's Wife After 2005 Ashes Win?
The English team had a wild time during celebration of their 2005 Ashes win at 10, Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister
England’s 2005 Ashes series victory is one of the seminal moments in English cricket history, as they won a hardly fought series with a once-in-a-lifetime kind of performance from Andrew Flintoff.
That win was followed by the England team doing a victory parade, and the nation erupted in celebration of their heroes. The English team was then invited by the English Prime Minister Tony Blair as well. However, by the time they arrived at 10, Downing Street, the official residence of the PM, the team was already sloshed as they had been drinking on the bus.
That led them to being quite frank and upfront when interacting with the staff at Downing Street.
“When we got to Downing Street [PM’s official residence] the boys were half-hammered,” Nigel Stockhill, team’s Strength and Conditioning coach told The Telegraph, as quoted by The Indian Express.
“We’d had a few on the bus. We get into the garden and there was one table with a tablecloth on it and a jug of water with 12 glasses. I said to someone you might need to up your game on the drinks. Then they rustled out a box of warm Beck’s. Hmm you’re still not cutting it. Anyway they did finally bring stuff in.
“It was incredible. It reflected the Prime Minister of the time not being a cricket follower and doing it out of a sense of duty or political points. Imagine if it had been the football team. They would have put on a full spread.”
Stockill spilt the beans on Kevin Pietersen’s actions at the party as well, which included some over-the-board conversations which led to the British PM’s wife asking the cricketers to “behave themselves”.
“KP was chit-chatting. I wouldn’t say flirting, but there was a bit going on with Cherie [Blair]. She was saying ‘you boys, behave yourselves’ as she was fluttering around the garden. KP went ‘Tell me Nige, who the **** is that?’”
As per Stockill, even Mrs. Blair was engaging in those conversations, and the mood was quite flirtatious.
“I reckon Cherie Blair had had a few before we arrived. She was quite flirtatious … It was incredible really. Something you never experience again. I remember getting drenched later that night with champagne in a nightclub. A whole bottle was poured over my head by KP,” Stockill added.
That meeting at Downing Street was even more scandalous as as per his own admission, pacer Simon Jones admitted urinating in the Prime Minister’s garden that day.
“I apparently peed in the garden at 10 Downing Street. That’s what they tell me,” Jones half told ESPNCricinfo.
“Did I do it? It could have been me – but I can’t remember. Harmy [Steve Harmison] was playing on the swing and Hoggy [Matthew Hoggard] was climbing a kids’ climbing frame. It was hilarious”
England are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their iconic victory this year.
