Disappointed to get out on 97, but feel like I've contributed: Jamie Overton

Trent Boult got the better of the England debutant after he stitched a record 241-run stand for the seventh wicket with Jonny Bairstow

Jamie Overton missed out on a maiden ton in his first-ever innings in Test cricket by just three runs, but has put says that he is pleased that his 97 has contributed significantly to the team's cause.

Overton walked in when England were tottering at 55 for 6. He then put on a record 241-run stand for the seventh wicket with Jonny Bairstow, which eventually helped England secure a lead of 31.  "It's been good fun," Overton told reporters. "Obviously I was very disappointed getting out on 97, but I feel like I've contributed to the team.

"Ben Stokes has got the ethos of trying to be entertainers for everyone and he said in the changing room earlier that the way me and Jonny played had the crowd on the edge of their seats."

"I like to think I'm quite an entertaining cricketer," added Overton

Overton also started New Zealand's collapse with the ball. The Blackcaps were cruising at 125 for 1 before Overton removed a well-set Tom Latham for 76 first ball after tea. England then struck at regular intervals to reduce New Zealand to 168 for 5 at the end of Day Three.

New Zealand are already 2-0 down in the three-match series and England will look to push for a whitewash in the remaining two days of the Test.

New Zealand skipper has had a poor 12 months or so since leading his side to the World Test Championship (WTC) title. Williamson has been in and out of the side due to injuries and also missed the second Test at Trent Bridge after testing positive for Covid-19.

Fast bowler Trent Boult reckons Williamson's poor form could be because he has not played many games on the bounce, leading to a bit of rustiness.

He's been in and out of the side over the last wee while and I'm sure he'll be frustrated with how it went today," said New Zealand left-arm paceman, who had sparked England's collapse by removing all of their top three in a brilliant burst.

"That's the game we play: the guy didn't try to get out, it was just down to good bowling, a bit of pressure and the situation that he was under."
