For Meg Lanning and Delhi Capitals, it was a third straight Women’s Premier League (WPL) loss after they failed to chase down 150 against Mumbai Indians in the season finale held on March 15 (Saturday) at the Cricket Club Of India (CCI) Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
Losing one final is still fine, two gives you pain, but three and that too in a row, under the same captain with almost the same team, broke the heart of one of the most successful leaders in women’s cricket and Capitals’ captain Meg Lanning.
“We have had another good season but unfortunately could not get over the line. We have not been able to put our best performances on the board in the final, which is disappointing, but that is cricket. We put ourselves in a good position, but you win some, you lose some,” Lanning said after the eight-run loss.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the winning captain, credited pre-tournament work, such as clearly stating each player's role and trying not to overreact, even after some bad days at the office.
“We made things very clear for everyone and had one-to-one meetings to clarify their roles. In the first season, we tried to do everything right. When we met this season, we discussed how things did not go right [last season]. We wanted to keep things simple, and as a team, we did that,” she said after Mumbai won their second title in three years.
