No Indian Premier League (IPL) contract? Not part of BCCI central contracts? Not part of the Indian national team? Even if the answer to all the above questions is no, a cricketer, playing just domestic cricket in India, can earn INR 1 Crore. Yes, it is possible; all he or his team needs to do is get into the final of the Ranji Trophy.
According to a new rule introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on September 28 (Sunday), a player playing 14 First Class Matches in a season will be eligible to get a cash reward of INR 1 Cr for consistency.
Harbhajan Singh, who attended the AGM as representative of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), informed the press about the new rule.
“It has been decided that if a player plays more domestic matches in a season, he will get more money. This will be an incentive for teams to reach the finals of domestic tournaments,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by Times of India.
“If a cricketer plays 14 first-class matches a season, he will get an additional match fee of Rs 1 crore,” added the Turbanator, explaining the full rule.
Earlier in 2024, a Test Match Incentive Scheme was launched by the BCCI to promote red-ball cricket. Before that, in 2021, the match fees for domestic cricketers at all age groups and across men’s and women’s categories were increased.
