Sam Konstas made a stunning Test debut against India, scoring 60 off just 65 deliveries in his first innings. However, it’s been a challenging ride for the 19-year-old since then. Konstas has managed scores of 8, 23, 22, 3, 5, 25, and 0 in his other seven Test innings.
In the ongoing three-match Test series in the West Indies, Konstas is averaging just 8.25 with the bat after four innings. With Australia already leading the series 2-0, the young opener is expected to get another opportunity in the third Test to prove his worth. Australian captain Pat Cummins doesn’t want him to get “too caught up” in evaluating every single innings.
"I think for anyone who's starting out their Test career, you are kind of picked for a reason and you at your best we know is good enough," said Cummins after Australia won the second Test by 133 runs, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
"It's just about concentrating on what makes you a really good player. For someone like a batter, it might be where you score, what tempo do you normally operate at your best. And just don't get too caught up in every innings (feeling) like the biggest thing in the world.
"I think the stat is, even the best batters in the world don't hit their average three out of four times or something like that. You're going to fail more often than you're going to succeed. So just as long as you're a quick learner, as long as you're moving well…and judge yourself after a series or so, not innings by innings."
The third Test will be a pink-ball encounter, set to be played at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica, from July 12 (Saturday).
