On the first two days of the third Test between India and England at Lord's, the full quota of 90 overs has not been bowled. On Day 1, India bowled just 83 overs, and on Day 2, the two teams bowled a combined 75 overs.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan was not too pleased with the lack of urgency shown by the two teams to finish the overs in time and feels that a monetary fine is not going to work.
“I don’t think fines work. I think these lads are quite rich,” Vaughan told Vaughan tol BBC Sport, as reported by Hindustantimes.com.
“I don’t think the cash is going to affect them. Been a problem for Test match cricket for a while. I know it’s hot. I know we’ve had a few injuries, but when we get to the fifth day, we have to bowl the 90 overs."
Vaughan also suggested how we can get in all the required overs. “You watch on day five when the players, the umpires know that 90 overs have to be bowled. They’ll be running around,” he pointed out.
“There won’t be as many drinks breaks, there won’t be as many delays... I’d make it very, very simple. You have to bowl the 90 overs. I would guarantee that would improve the pace.”
The ongoing five-match series is currently level at 1-1. England won the first Test at Hedingley by five wickets, but India bounced back at Edgbaston, claiming a 336-run victory.
