Most of the Indian players, barring the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravichandran Ashwin, are slated to play in the first round of the Duleep Trophy, starting on September 5 (Thursday) in Bengaluru and Anantapur.
With Bangladesh and New Zealand touring India before the Australia tour in November, the form of Indian pacers will be the key. Anantapur has a reputation for assisting pacers in all respects, and hence, former Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun believes that the curtain-raiser tournament has come at the right time to assess the Indian bowlers.
"It provides an opportunity for all the cricketers to have enough number of overs under the belt. Also, it’s a great process to see how they fare with the red ball. The selectors have picked nearly 18-20 players, isn’t it? So, I’m sure they must have zeroed in on a few of the bowlers,” Bharat Arun told IANS.
"Duleep Trophy provides you the right kind of platform for you to assess the bowlers. Also, the bowlers get to have enough number of overs under their belt so that it’s like preparation for the [future] Test series.”
India will next play against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in Chennai and Kanpur, respectively, before they take on New Zealand in a three-match Test series.
