Efficient Scotland march to Super 12

Scotland's 8-wicket win knocks out the host nation, Oman

Yet another clinical outing by Scotland has seen them register their third straight win in the ongoing T20 World Cup, thus confirming their Super 12 spot by topping their qualifying round group. Despite beating Bangladesh in their first game, Scotland were in a strange position where they needed to beat Oman or keep the margin of the defeat down to 1 run to proceed further. Evading any jitters, they crushed Oman by eight wickets, chasing the target with 18 balls to spare. The result also means Oman, the host nation of the Group B games are knocked out.

Asked to field first, Scotland dished out a clinical bowling effort to bundle out Oman for a below-par 122. They were helped by a bit of miscommunication between the Oman openers. Jatinder Singh, Oman’s best batter in the tournament thus far, ran himself out for a golden duck. Pushing the ball to the mid-on fielder, Jatinder ran to the other end without his partner, Aqib Ilyas responding to the call.

Once Kashyap Parajapati left early too, Oman were left in a spot of bother. Ilyas and Mohammad Nadeem added 38 runs for the third wicket to lend direction to the innings. The two played some handy shots but they were too few and far in between and the run-rate was less than 6 runs per over when Oman reached 50 in the ninth over.

The urge to pick the run-rate resulted in an incessant fall of wickets. Skipper Zeeshan Maqsood added 34 off 30 balls batting at number five but the innings never gathered momentum. Most of the attempts to clear the boundary ropes ended in catches in the deep as Scotland didn’t give any leeway in the field.

From 79 for three, Oman crumbled to 105 for seven, losing the fizz out of their innings at an important juncture. They were eventually bowled out for 122 in exactly 20 overs.

Josh Davey (3/25), Michael Leask (2/12), Safyaan Sharif (2/25) and Mark Watt (1/23) were the wicket takers for Scotland. Davey’s last over brought three wickets, including a run out.

The chase turned out to be a cakewalk for Scotland as they reached the target with as many as three overs to spare.

Skipper Kyle Coetzer made an attacking 28-ball 41 with the help of two boundaries and three sixes, while George Munsey (20) and wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Cross (26 not out) also played good hands.

Towards the end, Richie Berrington struck some lusty blows en route to an unbeaten 31 that came off just 21 balls and was laced with one boundary and three hits over the fence. Berrington finished off the chase in style, hitting Mohammad Nadeem for a four and a six.

Besides Scotland, Bangladesh also qualified for the Super 12s from the group by finishing second with four points. PNG is the other team from the group to bow out of the tournament.

Scotland are now placed alongside India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan and an yet-to-be decided second-placed team from Group A in Group 2 of the Super 12s. Bangladesh find themselves in Group 2 alongside England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka.
