England bundled out for their lowest Test score at home against Sri Lanka

Lankans pulled a rabbit out of their hat on Day 3 as they first posted 263 despite being 93/5 at one stage in their first innings and then got the hosts out for 156 within 34 overs in the second innings

The England cricket team were bowled out for 156 in their second innings of the third and final Test of the three-match series against Sri Lanka on Sunday (September 8) at The Oval in London. Incidentally, this was their lowest total ever against Sri Lanka in home conditions and the third-lowest ever in any conditions in the red-ball format.

The visitors pulled a rabbit out of their hat on Day 3 of the Test as they first managed to post 263 in their first innings, despite being 93/5 at one stage and then managed to get the hosts out within 34 overs in the second innings.

Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando were the pick of the bowlers for the Lankan team as they picked up 4/21 and 3/40 respectively. Kumara’s figures in this innings are the second-best by a Sri Lankan pacer against England in the second innings of a Test.

Best figures for a SL pacer against ENG in second innings of a Test match

5/50 - Dhammika Prasad, Leeds, 2014

4/21 - Lahiru Kumara, The Oval, 2024

4/39 - Chaminda Vaas, Kandy, 2001

For the hosts, wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith top-scored with 50-ball 67 while Dan Lawrence made an important 37.

At 82/7, England were staring down the barrel of defeat already before Smith pulled up a fighting 58-run stand with Olly Stone for the eighth wicket to give some respectability to the total that the English side would defend to make it a 3-0 clean sweep and keep the hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final alive.

At the time of publishing this, the visitors had started well in their chase and were 39/0, needing only 180 more to win their first game of the series. Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne were at the crease.
