England docked five WTC points for slow over-rate

Match referee David Boon also penalized England 100% of their match fee

England have been docked five World Test Championship points after their nine-wicket loss to Australia for slow overrate in first Test at Gabba. They were also fined 100 per cent of their match fees after they fell short by five overs at Brisbane.

The deficit has pushed England to sixth in the WTC point table with nine points. Joe Root's men have win percentage of 15 as a result and have 1 win and three losses in the new 2021-23 cycle. Australia pushed Pakistan to third with the win, while Sri Lanka top the table due to a superior win percentage.

"As per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a team is docked one point for each over short," the ICC release read.

"Match referee David Boon has also penalized England 100% of their match fee for falling five overs short of the targets after adjusting for time allowances. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel charges players 20% of their match fee for every over the team falls short on."

Australia batter Travis Head was also slashed 15 per cent of his match fee for using "inappropriate language" with England's Ben Stokes during the first innings of the match.

The second Ashes Test will be a day-night game which will begin on Thursday in Adelaide.
