England put an end to Australia's winning streak in ODIs

Australia headed into the match with 14 wins on the bounce, the streak for the second-most consecutive wins in ODI history

England put an end to Australia’s streak of 14 ODI wins in a row, beating their arch-rivals by 46 runs (DLS method) in the third ODI in Durham on Tuesday (September 24). Chasing 305, England were 254/4 in 37.4 overs when rain halted play and no further play was possible. England won courtesy of being 46 runs ahead of the DLS par score.

Australia headed into the match with 14 wins on the bounce, the streak for the second-most consecutive wins in ODI history, stretching from their ODI World Cup campaign in India last year. They had gone past Sri Lanka’s record while the record for the longest streak is with Australia only, which they achieved in 2003.

England were 11/2 at one stage in the run chase. However, skipper Harry Brook led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 110 off 94 balls to move England in front. He steadied the innings with a 156-run stand with Will Jacks (84 off 82 deliveries) for the second wicket off 148 balls.

Australia also missed Adam Zampa’s leg-spin on the field who had to be benched in this game due to illness. In his absence, the visitors played four seamers with none of them making a lasting impact.

Earlier, England won the toss and opted to bowl. They had Australia in a fix, restricting them to 132/4 at one point. But the Three Lions went for 104 runs in the final 10 overs to concede 304 runs on the board.

Steve Smith scored 60 off 82 balls while Alex Carey, having scored a crucial 74 in the last match, contributed an unbeaten 77 from 65 balls this time. But his innings wasn't enough this time as Australia would rue many of their other batters not converting their starts.

With this win, England have kept themselves alive in the series. The fourth ODI will be played at Lord’s on Friday (September 27).
