'Even if Yuvraj died...' - Yograj says he wanted his son to win WC for India at all cost
However, the most surprising thing was Yograj saying that his son didn’t even work 10% as hard as him.
Yograj Singh, former Indian international cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, once again caused controversy. This time, his fiery quotes came from an interview with Samdish Bhatia of ‘Unfiltered by Samdish’ on YouTube.
Recounting the harrowing experience of his family from the 2011 World Cup, when Yuvraj was suffering from lung cancer, Yograj said that his priority was still India winning the World Cup. Yuvraj’s health was secondary. In fact, he said that even if Yuvraj had succumbed to his ailments and India won the World Cup, he would have been a proud man.
“For our country, even if Yuvraj Singh had died from cancer and had won India the World Cup, I would have been a proud father. I still am very proud of him,” Yograj said in the interview.
“I have told him this over the phone as well. I wanted him to play even when he was spitting blood. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t die. Win this World Cup for India.”
Yograj, who runs an academy now and trains young cricketers in Chandigarh, said that he follows the same intensity of training with his disciples now.
“I tell them to give me in writing that if their son dies while training, it’s not on my hand.”
Yograj said that his son didn’t even work 10% as hard as him.
“Yuvraj Singh, if he had worked even 10 percent like his father, he would have become a great cricketer,” Yograj said, who has just played one Test and six ODIs for India.
Amidst all this, Yograj’s passion for the sport really shone through.
“I want one more life. I want to play cricket. I want to bat like Viv Richards and I want to become a fast bowler like Michael Holding. In India, Kapil Dev was like the only cricketer. Right from childhood to today, I adore him as a very, very great cricketer.”
