Despite not featuring in both the Women’s Asia Cup and and Ireland series, the 38-year-old Inoka Ranaweera has been included in Sri Lanka’s squad for Women's T20 World Cup 2024. The left-arm spinner has scalped 91 wickets in her career, averaging a stunning 18.03 with the ball.
However, her inclusion has come at the expense of the 21-year-old seamer Kawya Kavindi, who has only played ten games in her entire career. This has left Sri Lanka with just three pace-bowling options for the global event: Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, and Ama Kanchana.
Ranaweera is one of the four specialist spinners in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad, alongside Inoshi Priyadharshani, Sugandika Kumari, and Kavisha Dilhari. It doesn’t stop there, with Chamari Athapaththu’s off-spin adding to Sri Lanka’s spin-bowling arsenal.
The 22-year-old Kaushini Nuthyangana has been named in the travelling reserve, possibly as a backup wicketkeeper. Sri Lanka are placed in a tough group alongside India, Australia, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
