In what’s arguably the most extraordinary tactic ever implemented on a cricket field in the sport’s history, all 10 batters of the UAE Women’s side retired out in the same innings in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier clash against Qatar Women.
UAE were coasting at 192/0 in 16 overs after opting to bat in the clash in Bangkok, but wanted to end their innings prematurely in order to beat the rain and secure two points.
With rules not permitting declaration in T20Is, UAE extraordinarily resorted to the most outrageous tactic ever seen, with as many as 10 players retiring out. There were as many as eight diamond ducks in the innings, but it enabled UAE to end their innings at the end of the 16-over mark.
It proved to be a masterstroke as the team then bowled out Qatar for 29 and secured two points.
The result meant that UAE topped their group (Group B) in the Asia Region Qualifier, progressing to the next round to inch closer to T20 World Cup qualification.
It consists of nine teams split into three different groups of three. At the end of all the group fixtures, the top-ranked side from each group will proceed to the Super 3 stage. Every team will play against each other in the next round to determine the top two teams that will qualify for the Global Qualifier.
