After all the build-up towards the first Test, Australia’s new opener Jake Weatherald had the worst start possible, as the left-hander got out for a second-ball duck in Perth, on November 21 (Friday).
The left-hander walked out in hostile conditions against Jofra Archer, and lasted just two deliveries as Archer bowled a fuller one that rapped him in front of the stumps. While the on-field umpire gave it not-out, England reviewed, and it was clear as daylight on replay that the ball crashed into the leg-stump.
Weatherald became the first Australian opener in almost two decades to get out for a duck in his first Test innings, enduring a rough start to his Test career. Phil Hughes was the last Australian opener to get out for a duck on his debut Test innings, with the left-hander getting out for a four-ball nought against South Africa back in 2009.
The last time an Australian opener got out in his debut Test for a duck was Nathan McSweeney (0 off 2) against India at the same venue in Perth, back in 2024.
