After a thrilling T20I series which India and England move to the ODI series starting with the first game at The Oval on Tuesday (July 12). After losing the Birmingham Test in spectacular fashion, India won the first and second T20I to clinch the series with a margin of 50 and 49 runs respectively. However, there was more excitement left in the third and final T20I where England scored a massive 215 in 20 overs before Suryakumar Yadav brilliant 117 brought India closer but lost by 17 runs.
England, under new white-ball captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott, will look to make amends by winning the three-match ODI series. They will be boosted by the return of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Craig Overton, who were all rested for the T20I series. India, meanwhile, carry more or less the same squad which will look to continue their good run in limited-overs.
Ground Details
The Oval has not been the venue of choice for the ECB for limited-overs matches over the past few years. Since the 2019 World Cup, the historic venue has hosted only one ODI between England and Sri Lanka in July last year. Four other List-A matches followed after that international fixture until August 15, 2021 before the venue was only used to host T20 Blast matches. Average ODI scores in the first innings since August, 2019 are 190 and the highest total chased at the venue is 248 (county matches included).
Except for a few high-scoring T20 games, batting has been a bit difficult at The Oval. Pacers have claimed 29 wickets from nine innings since August, 2019 at an economy less than 3. Spinners have been used in only six innings in this period and have claimed 15 wickets an economy similar to that pacers. It is better to got with four frontline fast bowlers in your team along with fifth pace option who can bat.
