Players to watch out for
Nicholas Pooran: Until the game against Afghanistan, Nicholas Pooran hadn’t scored a single fifty in T20 World Cups. But in that clash, he absolutely obliterated the Afghani bowling unit, scoring a 53-ball 98, including taking 36 runs off a single Azmatullah Omarzai over. The fact that Pooran has a good record against England, with his last three scores being 10 (6), 39 (15) and 82 (45), should surely be enough reasons to keep an eye on him.
Harry Brook: Harry Brook’s form going into the Namibia clash was dicey, with scores of 1, 17* and 20*. But the right-hander turned his form around, saving England from a possible elimination with a 20-ball 47, with six boundaries, striking at 235. Only last year in December, Brook played a blinder against the Windies with a 7-ball 31, a knock where he smashed four sixes. He’s coming to form at the right moment, and he could be an integral figure of the peaking English side in the competition.
Alzarri Joseph: While the two left-arm spinners - Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie - have certainly played a huge role in the Windies’ resurgence, you shouldn’t forget Alzarri Joseph’s contribution. The tall pacer has picked up nine wickets, a joint-second most in the tournament, averaging 6.4, with 4/19 against New Zealand.
Key battles
Akeal Hosein vs England top order
Akeal Hosein is the man-in-form for the Windies, picking up wickets for fun with the new ball in the competition. So, his battle against the English top order could certainly be one of the battles that could shape the contest.
Hosein vs Jos Buttler: 7.1 overs, 65 runs, 2 wickets
Hosein vs Phil Salt: 8.3 overs, 63 runs, 1 wicket
Hosein vs Will Jacks: 2.2 overs, 27 runs, 2 wickets
Hosein vs Jonny Bairstow: 1 ball, 1 wicket
