Finch or Cummins should clear that air over Langer's departure: Usman Khawaja
NEWS'Langer brought humility back to the Australian team ,' the batter said
Following Justin Langer's resignation as Australia head coach, batter Usman Khawaja has called for Test skipper Pat Cummins or white-ball captain Aaron Finch to publicly address the matter and clear the air once and for all.
Khawaja, who returned to the Australian Test side after a gap of almost three years, scored twin hundreds in Sydney in the Ashes Test against England and as a result, has retained his place for the tour of Pakistan, slated to begin next month.
Speaking of Langer's departure, Khawaja said that he was disconnected from things as he was not part of the team for quite some time. “I didn’t really know what was going on. I wasn’t part of the process. I just came back into the team a few months ago,” Khawaja said, according to foxsports.com.au.
“I’ve been a little bit out of it.”
“There’s obviously a lot of ex-players talking about the playing group.
“I think at some stage, one of the captains, ‘Finchy’ or Patty, will probably have to stand up and answer some questions just to get rid of all the speculation that’s going around and to just put an end to it all.”
Khawaja also revealed that he had a word with Langer after he tendered his resignation and adds that he feels for him given how things went down.
“I feel for the man himself because I’ve got along with Justin for a long time,” Khawaja said.
“I love him as a bloke, he’s a legend, and on a personal level, whether I got dropped or whether he’s not the Australian coach, we both have that relationship.
“He brought humility back to the Australian team … I know what we played like before he was coach and I know what we played like when he was coach.”
Andrew McDonald will take interim charge of the Australian team for the home T20Is against Sri Lanka and also for the tour of Pakistan, beginning with the first Test on March 8.
