Glenn Maxwell has been inconsistent with the bat in the 20-over format but continues to be highly valuable with his off-spin. The Australian all-rounder is averaging 19.8 with the ball in 2025 — clearly his best in T20s since his debut in 2010.
Maxwell had a poor Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season with the bat but bowled some crucial overs for Punjab Kings (PBKS). He featured in only seven games and bowled 13 overs, picking up four wickets at a respectable economy rate of 8.5.
He has been even better in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, where he has taken nine wickets at an average of 15.3 and an economy rate of 7.7. Maxwell claimed 3/29 against MI New York on July 7 (Monday, IST), helping Washington Freedom secure a top-two finish.
In a match that was reduced to 18 overs per side, Maxwell dismissed Monank Patel, Tajinder Dhillon, and Sharad Lumba to restrict MI New York to just 112/8. Washington then chased down the target in 15 overs, thanks to Andries Gous’s unbeaten 34-ball 46.
Washington Freedom will now take on Texas Super Kings in Qualifier 1 on July 8. The winner of that game will qualify directly for the final, while the losing team will play the winner of the Eliminator between San Francisco Unicorns and MI New York for the second spot in the final.
