It has been a long time coming for West Indies and John Campbell as the batter became the first West Indies opener to hit a Test century in India since 2002. The last opener from the Caribbean to score a century in India was Wavell Hinds in 2002 in Kolkata.
Campbell achieved this feat on Day 4 of the second Test against India in Delhi on October 13 (Monday). In fact, he is the first West Indies opener to score a Test century since 2023, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul's unbeaten 207 against Zimbabwe Bulawayo being the previous such instance.
Along with Shai Hope, Campbell has also put on over 150 for the third wicket, making it the first such instance since 2011 when Darren Bravo and Kieran Powell put on 160 in Mumbai.
Playing his 25th Test, this is Campbell's maiden Test century since making his debut in 2019. Overall, this is his second international century, with his first one coming in an ODI against Ireland in 2019.
When Campbell and Hope joined hands, West Indies were in a spot of bother, being reduced to 35/2 after being asked to follow on. As things stand, West Indies are well on course to make India bat again.
India lead the two-match series 1-0, following their innings and 140-run victory in the first Test in Ahmedabad.
