Fit Anderson returns as England name squad for first two Ashes Tests

Josh Tongue holds his place following an impressive display against Ireland in the ongoing Test

40-year-old James Anderson, who wasn’t available due to an injury for the one-off Test against Ireland, returns to strengthen the already strong England side for the first two Tests against Australia. Josh Tongue, who made his debut in the Ireland Test, retains his place in the 16-player squad for the first two Ashes Tests.

Ben Foakes, who missed out due to Jonny Bairstow’s return continues to miss out, as Ollie Pope is the only other designated wicketkeeper in the squad. As expected, Ben Stokes captains the side, with England expected to feature the pace quartet of Anderson, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood in the first Test against Australia.

Dan Lawrence holds his place in the squad alongside Harry Brook, with no place for Liam Livingstone, who made his Test debut against Pakistan last year. Jack Leach is expected to be the only specialist spinner in the playing XI, with Joe Root set to play part as the second spinner in case conditions, assist.

“The England party will report to Birmingham on Monday 12 June. They are due to practice at Edgbaston from Tuesday 13 June,” said ECB in the press release.

Squad for the first two Ashes Tests: Ben Stokes (C), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
