Prior to South Africa’s first semi-final against England on October 29 (Wednesday), everything was against them, including their horrendous semi-final record in ODI World Cup history. But like a flick of a switch, Laura Wolvaardt changed the fortune of an entire nation, smashing a stellar 143-ball 169, where she hit 20 fours and four sixes.
Marizanne Kapp (42), Chloe Tyron (33) and Nadine de Klark (11) all combined to take South Africa to 319/7, the second-highest total in Women’s ODI World Cup knockout history. While England were always chasing history, one good knock on one of the best surfaces in the tournament could have got them there.
However, Kapp had another plan, as the right-arm pacer picked up figures of 5/20, including bowling three maidens to kick off the innings and picking up two wickets. Nat Sciver-Brunt top-scored for England with a 76-ball 64 but couldn’t prevent a heavy defeat for England, as they lost by 125 runs.
