Tim David is no longer just a finisher as he has a century to his name, batting at No.5 no less. It is not just any century, but the fastest for Australia across formats. He brought up his maiden T20I ton against West Indies in just 37 balls in July 2025.
This has forced former Australian all-rounder Brendon Julian to ask the Australian selectors to promote the Singapore-born late-order batter to the middle order ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 in Sri Lanka and India.
“I love the idea of Tim David coming up the order. I’ve been saying for a couple of years that he should bat higher,” Julian was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket on August 8, ahead of Australia’s limited overs home series against South Africa.
“I think he bats too low, he’s better than that, he’s better than a guy who faces 10–15 deliveries,” added Julian.
The man with seven Tests and 25 ODIs under his belt during a period when Australia was the toughest team to break into, Julian, was correct in his statement, given that in the eight innings that David has batted at number five, he has been an absolute beast.
The 29-year-old has an average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 188 while batting at number five for Australia, serving notice to the team management to bat him at that number regularly. While at number six, where he has played 32 innings, David averages a good enough 28 and has struck at 172.
