In a shocking move, Cricket West Indies (CWI) have named Shai Hope as the new T20I captain for the upcoming season on March 31 (Monday). Hope has taken over the reign from Rovman Powell, who is currently playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
CWI explained the rationale behind the decision, stating that they want to maximise Powell’s batting potential. Not just that, the former Delhi Capitals’ star has been earmarked for leadership duties by their current coach, Daren Sammy.
"I have expressed to him [Powell] that he ought to feel dignified by his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a crucial role in elevating our T20 team to new heights," CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe. "His leadership has left a strong foundation, and we are grateful for his efforts."
"As the team continues its evolution, Hope blends instinctive decision-making with analytical precision, using in-depth match data and player-performance insights to shape strategy," Sammy said. "Shai is a strong believer in team performances, and his meticulous preparation, coupled with his calm and composed demeanour under pressure, makes him an ideal leader at this stage."
Under Powell’s leadership, the West Indies won the series in the shortest format against India, England, and South Africa.
Kraigg Brathwaite, who has been skipper of West Indies over the last WTC cycle, has stepped down from his role ahead of the series against Australia. The right-handed opener announced his decision on March 31 (Monday), revealing that he wanted a ‘smooth transition’ between his tenure and the next one.
During his tenure as West Indies captain, Brathwaite has had several historic triumphs, including the first in 27 years against Australia at the iconic Gabba. Under his captaincy, West Indies also won a series-levelling match against Pakistan and an away series win against Bangladesh (2021).
However, Brathwaite is expected to continue as a batter, as he is one of West Indies’ mainstays in the batting department.
