Former India captain and former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, has finally accepted his first job as head coach of a team. The Indian great will take over the reins of Pretoria Capitals from Jonathan Trott as he was named as the head coach of the SA20 side on August 24 (Sunday).
As head coach of the Capitals, Ganguly’s first job would be to take them to the playoffs in SA20's 2025-26 season, a stage they have not reached in the last two seasons, after finishing at the top of the table in the inaugural season.
Ganguly, after retirement from international cricket and the IPL in 2012, became a member of the Justice Mudgal Committee which probed the Spot Fixing saga of 2013 in the IPL. He later became Joint Secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) in 2014 and later became its President in 2015.
The 53-year-old, while continuing in his role at CAB between 2015-19, did not interfere much in the IPL, taking occasional gigs as a commentator. It was in 2019, the year when he also became the BCCI President, that Ganguly started his association with the Capitals franchise, becoming Delhi Capitals’ mentor.
However, he left the job soon after becoming BCCI President and rejoined after completing his tenure in BCCI in 2023. In 2024, he became the Director of Cricket at JSW Sports.
Thus, the Pretoria Capitals job will be his first as head coach of any side. Pretoria will begin their SA20 2025-26 campaign against Joburg Super Kings on December 27.
