Former Mumbai Spinner Padmakar Shivalkar Passes Away Aged 84

The left-arm spinner played in 124 first-class games and took 589 wickets at a stunning average of 19.69

Former Mumbai left-arm spinner Padmakar Shivalkar passed away on March 3 (Monday). Shivalkar was 84 and unwell for the last few months, reported the Indian Express.

Shivalkar played in 124 first-class games and took 589 wickets at a stunning average of 19.69, including 42 five-fers and 13 10-wicket hauls. However, his career coincided with Bishan Singh Bedi's, and therefore, he could never play for India.

Shivalkar, who coached Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, received the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

“Mumbai cricket has lost a true legend today. Padmakar Shivalkar Sir’s contribution to the game, especially as one of the finest spinners of all time, will always be remembered. His dedication, skill, and impact on Mumbai cricket are unparalleled. His passing is an irreplaceable loss to the cricketing fraternity,” Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik said.

Former India and Mumbai batter Wasim Jaffer told the Indian Express: “One of Mumbai’s greatest match-winners, a stalwart of the game who, despite his immense record in First-Class cricket, was unfortunate never to don the Indian cap.

“A cricketer of remarkable humility and simplicity, he was admired both on and off the field. My deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.”
